From 1989 to 1992 the artist worked on this cycle, with the support and a scholarship from the Hans-Lilje-Stiftung, Hannover. He was accompanied by the then director of the Sprengel Museum Hannover, Dr. Büchner.
Gassmann adhered strictly to the chronology of the biblical text of the Revelation and relied on the translation from Edurad Lohse.
The biblical text describes the end of the world and time in monumental pictures and this seems to be the fascination it holds for the artists who dedicated themselves to depicting it.
So the Apocalypse of John has challenged the painters time and again. Gassmann is one of only three painters who has painted the complete Revelation to John. The other two being Albrecht Dürer and Lucas Cranach.
